People react not just with concern, but with disdain — often toward anyone who uses AI at all. That reaction feels righteous. It feels protective of human creativity, labor, and truth. But much of it is aimed at the wrong target. History shows us this pattern clearly: when a new technology arrives faster than social norms and laws can adapt, we lash out sideways — at users — instead of upward, at systems and power. AI is no exception. — ## Yes, This Technology *Is* Different — And That’s Exactly Why Misplaced Anger Is Dangerous Critics are right about one thing: AI is not just another tool. Cars extended human movement. Phones extended communication. AI extends **cognition** — writing, organizing, synthesizing, decision-making. That *is* a category break. Pretending otherwise would be dishonest. But here’s where critics get it wrong: recognizing the danger does not justify indiscriminate condemnation of its use. When cars were first introduced, people didn’t die because pedestrians were careless. They died because a powerful new technology entered shared public space without rules. Early responses blamed individuals instead of acknowledging systemic risk. Only after widespread harm did traffic laws, licensing, and safety standards emerge. For years, texting behind the wheel was common — not because people were immoral, but because the technology arrived before norms and enforcement. Laws followed tragedy, not foresight. Anger that refuses to distinguish these cases becomes performative — not protective. — ## Safeguards Aren’t Optional — and They Can’t Be Vague A fair critique remains: *We’ve been asking for safeguards since social media. Where are they?* That’s exactly the point.
